    Description of Activity

Presented paper within a symposium parallel session titled: 'It's life Jim! but not as we know it': values and community in the life of Academies. Here we presented a range of papers exploring the sometimes conflicting values of academies in the UK and the values of local communities. Values located in neo-liberal notions of self responsibility and self-determinism underpinned by market values of individual liberty achieved through competition and skills learned and accredited primarily within the cognitive domain. We further challenge current trends by academies to maintain physical boundaries between communities, which they purport to serve and the school site. We claim academies, if they are to serve the needs of local communities, must also aim to develop closer ties with those communities in order to replicate their values and processes which support the students' learning suitable for them to participate and apply their learning in the community when they leave school.
