FiveRivers were commissioned by Thames Water Utilities Ltd (TWUL) to conduct a programme of fisheries monitoring to assess the efficacy of a bespoke European eel screening and a fish recovery and return (FRR) system, as per the Chingford South el Regulations 2009 Compliance Report.
TWUL were obliged to upgrade existing screening to protect European eel Anguilla anguilla under the Eels (England and Wales) Regulations 2009 (HM Government of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, 2009), however, due to site-specific constraints, a feasibility study (Atkins, 2019) determined that the only feasible option was a custom, site-specific screening solution. This option, whilst incorporating best practice wherever possible, fell outside the ‘Screening at intakes and outfalls: measures to protect eel’ guidelines for compliance set by the Environment Agency (EA, 2010), thereby requiring monitoring in order to provide evidence of successful screening for juvenile life stages of the target species, European eel.
This report documents the first phase of that monitoring.
