    Description of Activity

This one day urban design charrette was based around the theme ‘Connecting Portsmouth’ and was a creative gathering of experienced professionals, postgraduate students and University tutors to begin to explore ways to re-connect the city of Portsmouth.

Over time the city of Portsmouth has developed two distinct centres (Commercial Road and Gunwharf Quays). The development of Gunwharf Quays has drawn attention away from the original centre along Commercial Road and Guildhall Square. The aim of this day was to redress some of the urban design issues through analysing the existing condition and suggesting design interventions to knit the two centres together.

In preparation for this event, students from the University of Portsmouth School of Architecture undertook preparatory research and analysis of the area around Queen Street in a combined BA1 undergraduate and Diploma 1 postgraduate project.
