Description of Activity
In this talk I will draw on various work from both corpus linguistics and SFG to explore how both approaches work with the concept of choice. I will highlight shared assumptions and common ground between the two approaches before discussing Hoey's theory of Lexical Priming (Hoey, 2005). Lexical Priming grew from work in both areas and provides a good theoretical framework for work in both. My paper will introduce my own work on Lexical Selection (Hadikin, 2015). This model draws on the same bases and assumptions of Lexical Priming but moves the focus to chunks of text moving through a community in ways similar to biological evolution.
