Description of Activity
Presentation on "Axis of Evil 2.0?".In recent years, and especially since Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, political, economic, and military cooperation among undemocratic and hostile states has increased. Russia, Iran, China, and North Korea sit at the centre of this “Axis of Evil 2.0.” Russia and Iran have notably strengthened ties, with Iran openly endorsing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Both states also support the Assad regime in Syria. Furthermore, Russia has been buying drones from Iran for use in Ukraine. Additionally, Iran is the biggest supporter of terrorism around the world, providing financial aid, weapons, and training to Hezbollah in Lebanon, Houthis in Yemen, pro-Iranian Shia militias in Iraq, as well as Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Gaza. Meanwhile, North Korea’s collaboration with Russia, particularly in weapon exchanges, poses additional challenges to international security. North Korea has also been engaged in various illicit activities to generate revenues to fund its weapons program, including arms sales to Hamas, Iran, and other Islamic militant groups. China’s strategic alignment with Russia further complicates the situation. China has never condemned Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, and China and Russia have expanded trade and defence ties over the past decade. This increased cooperation between Russia, Iran, China, and North Korea not only challenges the rules-based international order but also raises
concerns about the prospects for peace and stability.
