Description of Activity

The aim of this project was to design a new tea room/ function room that sits on the site of the old glasshouse, against the existing stone wall in the Memorial Garden. This facility:

- Could accommodate up to 50 people at a time
- Fitted in with the surroundings and the beauty of the garden
- Has sufficient toilet facilities
- Had modern kitchen features
- Was mindful of the primary aim of the project and therefore whilst being accessible by the public allowing enough privacy for the veterans who are working within the secure space

The participants worked in design teams and formed a collaboration between architecture and interior design. Each design team had to come up with a design proposal for the site, which incorporated a new structure and a sensitive interior that met the needs of the brief. Each scheme was presented to the client at the end of the week. The presentations clearly explained the design concept and included a range of drawings including site location plan, plan, sections, elevation and 3D visuals to ‘sell’ the scheme. Models were also be produced. As well as working in a team, participants kept a personal design/ research diary throughout the week that demonstrated their participation and reflection on the experience of the week.
