Design Charrette for the Portland Building: 'The Next Space'

Activity: Participating in or organising an event typesParticipation in workshop, seminar, course

Description of Activity

This one week intensive ‘Live’ project was orchestrated to initiate collaborations between Interior Design and Architecture students, working with a ‘real’ client, whilst solving real problems, simulated through a ‘working in practice’ model.

The aim of this project was to analyse contemporary ways of thinking about spaces for the consumption of food and drink, and applying that knowledge to ‘The Next Space’, a University Café situated in the Portland building. The project was run as a competition with students divided into teams including both Interior Design and Architecture students.

The design brief specified that proposals had to complement or contrast with existing University facilities and define:
• What is the unique selling point?
• What is the venue’s identity/image?
• What is the relationship between the ‘servant and the
served’?
• What does the venue sell and whom will this attract?
• How do customers buy products? Eat? Drink? Sit? Meet?
