    Description of Activity

The aim of this article is to investigate and to provide empirical evidence on the determinants of competitive balance (CB) at league level in men's football first tiers in leagues registered to the Asian Football Confederation over the 2006-2021 period. To do so, data has been collected across 44 first Asian football divisions over 16 seasons. Through the analysis in this paper, it was found that average CB in Asia has declined between 2006 and 2021, posing a problem to league organisers at this moment in time (Szymanski, 2016). Based on our findings we can make the following interpretations which might have an impact on the sports contest format in Asian football leagues. It can be said that an Asian football league is likely to be more balanced if it operates a promotion and relegation system with playoffs to determine the league winner. The league should choose not to have multiple groups as this leads to decline in CB.
