The winner of our In Between Gallery Open Call Vera Hadzhiyska discusses her series ‘With the Name of a Flower’ in this Photo Fringe First Monday Artist Talk focussing on her family history and forced name changes in 20th century Bulgaria when Muslim Bulgarian names were changed to communist state-approved ones.In this talk Vera discusses her Bulgarian family history, postmemory, identity, working with archival material, creating work and curating exhibitions in different contexts
Vera has an MA and a BA degree in Photography from the University of Portsmouth. She has exhibited internationally in Bulgaria, Greece, France and the United Kingdom. Her work has been published in Musee Magazine, Source Photographic Review, Calvert Journal, Loupe Magazine AND Then There Was, Balkan Stories and Bulgarian Photography Now among others.
Her work 'Yellow Dress' is currently on show in Fabrica's InBetween Gallery window on Duke St Brighton until April 2021 in partnership with Photo Fringe Spectrum Lab and Loupe Magazine. The In Between Gallery is an opportunity for emerging photographers to display work in this temporary gallery space in the heart of Brighton for all to see.
