    Description of Activity

When men left to fight on the Western Front and at sea many women went to work to support the war effort. However, although much is known about Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) nurses, the 'Land Girls', and those that served in military organisations such as the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) and the Women's Royal Naval Service (WRNS), less is known about the women who helped to keep the Royal Navy afloat. Using examples from Portsmouth Royal Dockyard and other UK dockyard establishments, Mel will explore aspects of work, womanhood and widowhood to highlight their wartime experiences and their contribution to the male-dominated heavy industry of shipbuilding during a time of 'total war'.
