Professor Sanders has been a Consultant Engineer and Reader in Systems and Knowledge Engineering at the University of Portsmouth since 2002, except for breaks for mobilized military service and seconded to the Royal Academy of Engineering. He authored three books, over 300 articles, and several patents/inventions. His research makes things smarter, including powered wheelchairs, energy systems, assistive technologies, sensors and robotics. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (FIET), Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (FIMechE) and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). He received two first degrees, B.Sc. Electrical and Electronic Engineering (1984) and B.A. Social Science and Mathematics (1985), and higher qualifications: Ph.D. Path Planning (1990), DMS in Management Studies, and MBA in Creative and Change Management (2001).
