Title: Playing with New Interaction Metaphors

Abstract: State of the art has focused on designing gaze interaction based on the metaphor “what you look at is what you get”. In games, eye-based interactions rely on aligning the eyes with objects of interest, focusing on utility, efficiency or visual immersion at the cost of limiting the perceived player experience beyond the novelty of input or data insights. I propose to challenge this approach by investigating new interaction metaphors and creative opportunities to use gaze in games by building on the inherent capabilities of the eyes and using critical interaction design to explore unexpected design spaces. In this keynote, we will address how focusing on understanding game interactions based on “not looking” can help guide the creation of novel interaction techniques and reflect on the aesthetic value of complex player experiences that take input from the eyes of interest to future immersive digital experiences.
