Description of Activity

MIE 2025 SPC co-chair

As Scientific Program Committee Chair for MIE 2025, the Medical Informatics Europe conference, I was responsible for designing and delivering the scientific programme for a community of more than 700 delegates in the field of health informatics. From the earliest stages of the conference planning, I worked closely with the conference chair to develop the initial proposal and define the core themes of the event. Together, we articulated the vision of "Intelligent Health Systems – From Technology to Data and Knowledge" and ensured that this vision remained central in every stage of programme development.

Throughout the year leading up to the conference we held weekly meetings to plan timelines, monitor progress on submissions and reviews, and align programme activities with the strategic goals of EFMI. As the lead editor of the conference proceedings, I ensured that all accepted papers met academic standards for inclusion in the Studies in Health Technology and Informatics series.

I personally reviewed more than 80 submissions – assessing scientific quality, methodological rigour and relevance. In addition, I recruited, organised and supported an international panel of expert reviewers to ensure that all submissions received fair and constructive feedback. I allocated manuscripts to reviewers based on subject matter expertise and oversaw the full peer review lifecycle, from initial assignment through to final decision.

I structured the conference tracks around current priorities in digital health, including learning health systems, clinical AI and decision support, data visualisation, public and population health, precision medicine and One Health. I then worked with the SPC chairs to select the highest-quality contributions and structure the final agenda, balancing oral presentations, posters, workshops and panel sessions in a way that would stimulate both scientific exchange and practical discussion.

In the final months before the event, I managed communications with authors, guided them in preparing final manuscripts, and coordinated session chairs and keynote speakers. The outcome was a well-structured, engaging programme reflecting the latest research and innovation in health informatics.
