Irving Berlin, as Jerome Kern famously said, ‘…has no place in American music. He is American music.’

We live in difficult ‘lockdown’ times, and perhaps there is no better moment to look outward and celebrate a man who was able to absorb American manners and American life of his time. In turn, he returned these impressions back to the world in his songs.

This online talk, reminds listeners of the enormous output of this extraordinary talent, as well as perhaps introduce them to some new works. The talk focuses on the film evidence of his work, and includes prompts for listeners to click on youtube links that are provided along the way.
