Professional Doctorate in Education (EdD) Summer Saturday PechaKucha

Activity: Participating in or organising an event typesParticipation in workshop, seminar, course

Description of Activity

The event revolved around student presentations. By July, current first years should have plenty to discuss with regard to their unobtrusive projects and/or the philosophical foundations of their research. Second years will be reflecting on feedback from their final assessment. Those in the research phase have a very wide variety of experiences to report, relating to literature reviews, ethical approval processes, fieldwork, changes of focus, data analysis, writing up, and so on.

The style of presentation for the day were a PechaKucha. This is a format requiring 20 slides with 20 seconds of commentary each (resulting in a 6 minutes 40 seconds long presentation). From one perspective, presentations of this kind are relatively undemanding compared to a more traditional 20 minute academic format. On the other hand, the PechaKucha’s requirement for brevity and accessibility are rather challenging, and it is this enforced streamlining of complex academic arguments that makes the experience of putting together and delivering this kind of presentation so valuable.
