Research Futures - President Biden's first 100 days: success or failure

Activity: Talk or presentation typesInvited talk

Description of Activity

Coinciding with President Biden's visit to the UK, two American University of Portsmouth academics, Dr Erika Hughes and Dr Brian Frederick, who were not Biden supporters and provided extensive UK media commentary during the US election, look at whether anything has really changed in US politics 5 months later and ask questions including:

Has Biden lived up to his promises or have his promises become secondary considerations when faced with the responsibility and reality of the office?

Has Biden instigated a turning point in human rights?

How can Biden heal American politics following the storming of the US Capitol building? Or will US politics repeat the mistakes of Germany in the 1930s when faced with the rise of the Nazis?

Can Biden destigmatise transgender politics? Did Trump’s policies lead to the so-called bathroom wars and an increase in the homicides of transgendered people?

Does Biden’s own history suggest that the crimes of the powerful will go unchallenged?

What can British students and pedagogy learn from recent American politics and the democratic experience?
