Description of Activity

Re-thinking Ability. A workshop for Friends of KCC

Our understanding of disability is often caught up in medical discourses. We
would like to invite participants to join a conversation that explores different
narratives of disability: from the perspective of a person with lived experience;
professional narratives and theoretical ideas around disability.
We hope to connect these reflections with our own work and lives: to re-think
taken for granted practices; to consider new ways of working; possible
therapeutic opportunities and relationships with those who are affected by
disability.

The workshop can be useful for professionals wanting to re-think assumptions
and beliefs about ability and disability in their work or personal life.
The focus of the workshop is learning disability but the ideas could be useful to
other forms of physical and cognitive ability. We will be using examples from
our own practice in the NHS. This workshop is relevant to therapy and
supervision.
