Romaphobia and the Media

Description of Activity

‘Romaphobia and the media’ responds to the recent negative reporting and the damaging political discourse about Roma minorities across Europe. Reflecting on both the British and European contexts, it addresses three crucial questions about the ways Roma minorities are being discussed and debated in public discourses: (1) Who defines who is ‘Roma’, and what for? (2) How and why do the representations of these groups repeatedly fail to recognise their diversity and normality? (3) Are there any alternatives? The event brought together academics, activists and journalists interested in challenging issues in the representations of minorities in the media. There will be three panels: Roma in UK media; Roma in Central and Eastern European media; and alternative images of Roma. It is a collaboration between the University of Portsmouth (Centre for European & International Studies Research) and King’s College London (Centre for Language, Discourse & Communication).‘Romaphobia and the media’ is a collaboration between the Centre for European and International Studies (CEISR) at the University of Portsmouth, and the Centre for Language Discourse & Communication at King’s College London. The event is part-funded by a British Academy Small Grant.
