    Description of Activity

In this presentation Victoria Wang (ICJS University of Portsmouth) and Simon Edwards present findings from the first stage of a three part study into young people social networking practices. We identify a range of behaviours carried out within a range of relationships across eight prominent social networking apps. We draw on Giddens (1991) to identify a highly reflexive network of carefully managed relationships, which are signified and managed within language used within a range of specific behaviours. We also identify trends whereby specific behaviours are managed on specific social networking sites. We draw on these findings to challenge mis-perceptions about stranger danger and cyberbullying and re-construct these often mis-understood terms within a more positive view of young people's social networking practices.
