Sociolinguistics and Language Education Seminar 3

Description of Activity

Participant at a seminar on sociolinguistics, participatory pedagogy and language teacher education

"Details: Feedback from our first two seminars - on multilingual repertoires (2nd Feb 2019) and language ideologies (22nd June 2019) - suggested that a lot of people were interested in further exploration of the relationship between this kind of sociolinguistics and teacher education. In this seminar we propose to explore the opportunities offered by participatory approaches (e.g. those taken up by groups such as English for Action www.efalondon.org ) for language teacher education and CPD. The session will itself be participatory. Attendees will be engaged in activities to pool their existing knowledge about participatory approaches and to discuss the affordances and challenges of approaching teaching and learning in this way. We hope to include experiences from all sectors – primary, secondary, FE and HE as well as programmes such as CELTA and DELTA. We will also have an invited panel to discuss the issues which emerge in the course of our discussion.

Confirmed panel members so far: Ben Rampton (Professor of Sociolinguistics, KCL), Lucy Henning (University of Roehampton, primary education), Sam Holmes (Causeway Education, MFL and EAL in secondary education), Vera Hutchinson (IoE/UCL, adult education) and Richard Gallen (CELTA/DELTA) as well as other members of the hub (Mel Cooke, KCL, Constant Leung, KCL, Becky Winstanley, EFA and KCL, Dermot Bryers, EFA and KCL and Anthony Tomei, Bell Foundation and KCL)."
