Description of Activity
During the last decade, there have been a number of shifting trends when it comes to the sport industry. While the number of professional sports teams has stayed mainly constant over time, the addition of jobs created by the growth of technology has opened up thousands of career opportunities that did not previously exist. Moreover, the influx of billions in television and sponsorship money (the global sports industry is predicted to reach US$73.5 billion by 2019), coupled with increasing private investment capital into the industry, has allowed for the proliferation of sports marketing, management and consulting agencies. With the sports industry often growing faster than a country’s national GDP, the need to run clubs and associations as organized businesses has become paramount. As such, there are now widespread opportunities in sports management roles, for instance those relating to marketing and sponsorship, sports media (traditional and social media) as well as in hospitality and events management. In all these areas, there is also a growing demand for senior managers who can combine their knowledge and passion for a particular sport with the necessary toolkit to drive a club or organization towards enduring success, both on the field and in the boardroom.
This presentation explores opportunities and trends within the sports industry, specifically examining the survival of amateur sport amid the increasing growth of the professionalized sporting landscape. Furthermore, the presentation examines the role that the University of Portsmouth plays in providing courses, research and career pathways for individuals interested in the Sports Industry.
