Opening Talk for the EdD Conference 2025 - "Research Identities"
In this opening talk, I will offer a starting point to collectively reflect on and define the key concepts underlying the EdD Conference: Identity, Positionality and Reflexivity. I will consider the tensions between “sameness” and “movement” in our definition of identity. I particular, it will look at how different facets of our identity/identities express themselves in the conduct of our research, possibly influencing our relationships with participants. I will examine the epistemological tensions between trying to resist our identity, or owning it in the process of carrying our projects. With the awareness of our identity and formulation of our positionality comes the awareness of power dynamics. To facilitate reflexivity (the explicit analysis of our own roles), I will share a series of prompts and activities. The talk will be an invitation to consider, throughout the conference, what feeds our own perception of ourselves as researchers.
