The Years of Travelling Anxiously Book Launch and Research Reflection

Activity: Participating in or organising an event typesParticipation in workshop, seminar, course

Description of Activity

Tom Sykes and stellar researchers from across the University of Portsmouth delivered this unique event spanning various disciplines and methodologies. Historians, sociologists, film scholars, creative writers, media experts and a puppeteer reflected on how anxiety and mental distress figure in their own research. There was storytelling and performance, analysis and debate.

The Years of Travelling Anxiously blends memoir, psychogeography, history and cultural commentary to explore the phenomenon of travel anxiety. It examines the ways in which the built environment affects state of mind and what anxiety has to tell us about the Self and subjectivity. Moreover, it draws on Tom's Jewish migrant ancestry to pose questions about anxiety as a construct of time and place. He and Matt Smith gave multimedia performances based on excerpts from the book.
