DescriptionScientists believe that the information stored in the universe is as significant as the states of matter: solid, liquid, gas, plasma and should be regarded as one itself. This leads to the question that if everything in the universe is data, then is the universe essentially just a giant computer running a program and we’re the characters?

DescriptionIn a recent study, Melvin M. Vopson – mathematician and senior lecturer at the University of Portsmouth – proposed new estimates of the amount of information encoded in all baryon matter (i.e. ordinary or “luminous” matter) in the Universe.

The study that describes his research results recently appeared in the scientific journal AIP Avances, a publication maintained by the American Institute of Physics (AIP). While earlier estimates have been made on the amount of information encoded in the Universe, Vopson’s is the first to rely on Information Theory (IT) – an area of study that deals with the transmission, processing, retrieval and use of information.

DescriptionSince the beginning of the Digital Age (ca. the 1970s), theoretical physicists have speculated about the possible connection between information and the physical Universe. Considering that all matter is made up of information that describes the state of a quantum system (aka. quantum information), and genetic information is coded in our DNA, it’s not farfetched at all to think that physical reality can be expressed in terms of data.

DescriptionThe information capacity of the Universe has been the subject of great debate since the 1970s and continues to stimulate multiple branches of physics research. A researcher at the University of Portsmouth thus attempted to assess the exact amount of information encoded in all visible matter. By his estimate, there would be around 6 x 1080 bits of information stored in all particles of matter in the observable Universe.

DescriptionThe universe is very strange if we stop to think about some of the most basic principles of physics, such as the uncertainty of the state of particles until we observe them, or gravity being a distortion in space-time. It is therefore not surprising that some "crazy" hypotheses published by scientists make sense. And the new idea that information is the fifth state of matter is one example.

DescriptionHave you ever wondered how big your computer hard drive would have to be to store all the information in the cosmos? Well, a physicist has provided an interesting ballpark figure. Every particle in the visible Universe would add up to 6x1080 bits of information. That’s a 6 followed by 80 zeros. For comparison. One terabyte is 8,000,000,000,000 bits (that’s just 12 zeros).

DescriptionThey might seem useless or even paroxysmal calculations but in reality the amount of information that the universe can contain has been the subject of much discussion among scientists for several decades. With the advent of the digital age, then, it was understood that the question can also have implications for various sectors of physics and information technology.

To confirm the importance of this discussion is also Melvin M. Vopson, a researcher who has made an interesting study published in AIP Advances [1] in which he explains how he made the estimate regarding the amount of information in the visible universe.
