The EU Effort to Help Civilian Victims in Ukraine

Press/Media: Expert comment

Description

Children, being one of the most vulnerable groups in any society, are granted special protection under international humanitarian law. Yet we continue to see them murdered and injured in areas far from the frontlines, including in areas with zero military targets, claims Patrick Thompson, Ukraine Researcher at Amnesty International. Amnesty is only one of many charitable, private and governmental organizations which have been instrumental in protecting Ukrainian citizens since Russia’s brutal invasion began. How has the EU fared in this global effort to help civilian victims? Well, not very well, according to Josep Borrell, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs. Mr. Borrell has said that EU countries must speed up the decision-making process to support Ukraine, which has previously taken too long. What should the EU do to up its game?

Dr Veronika Poniscjakova, Deputy Director of the Portsmouth Military Education Team, discussed these matters on TVP World (International).
