Ukraine complains to WTO about Hungary, Poland and Slovakia banning its food products

Press/Media: Expert comment

Description

The latest dispute over grain exports shows how difficult it is even for the staunchest of allies to agree upon everything, especially where local politics comes into play. With Poland and Slovakia poised for parliamentary elections, tensions began to rise among the farming community over cheap Ukrainian agricultural produce. In Romania and Bulgaria, governments partially backed down from their policies after disgruntled farmers took to the streets. For its part, Ukraine's government arguably did not help, adding fuel to the fire. Can the disputes be resolved and the mood of camaraderie - still present among ordinary people - successfully restored across the board?
