Description
This study adapts the goggles experiment to investigate if, in a competitive food context, domestic dogs can mentalise the visual perspective of a human. Dogs (N=24) gained experience of an apparatus with two baited compartments. The compartments had either a transparent or opaque lid . Dogs could take food that was either hidden or visible to a human. In the test, dogs were told to “leave” the food and both compartments were baited. There were two conditions; the human remained in the room (social), or left the room (non-social). We observed: (i) whether the dog stole the food, (ii) the compartment they stole from, and (iii) latency to steal.
