    Description

This copy of the Supplementary Information is subject to the same embargo as the post-print and will be available here from 26/10/20.

If your organisation has a subscription for the journal publisher (sometimes termed ‘authorised user’ or similar), the supplementary files are available online at https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs00267-019-01220-4#SupplementaryMaterial

The content of the supplementary files includes the followinf figures and tables:

Figure S1: Model Validation. Comparison of hydraulic head produced by the model with the field monitoring data as collected from the BWDB.

Figure S2: Additional lithological sections. These two sections are from the two northerly profile parallel to the one included in Figure 1 of the main script along which model was developed. The sections show that the clay-silt layers are laterally discontinuous but form a zone of low-permeability layers between 20 to 40 m below ground level.

Figure S3: Salt water shrimp farming is increasing in polder 31 over the recent years. In the above Google Earth images two areas are high-lighted where in 2014 and 2018 images are compared.

Figure S4: Effects of rainfall amount changes on groundwater for a) current rainfall conditions, b) 10% of current rainfall and c) double of current rainfall . Rainfall pattern change does not have significant visible influence on groundwater within such short period of time.

Table S1: Water salinity data from different sources

Table S2: Elevation and element size of different land-use features and lithology
