Description of impactPerformed experiments to suggest that iontophoresis (a procedure that applies an electric potential across the skin to prevent excess sweating) can be safely carried out on patients with metallic implants (including IUD coils). This work, in collaboration with St Mary’s Hospital, Portsmouth, will mean that iontophoresis treatments can now be carried out on a wider range of people – local policy is being changed and publication being written.
Narrative"James' help has been invaluable in planning and executing a robust experiment to enable a local dermatology department (one of the largest NHS centres in the South of England) to prove the safety of a treatment for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) in patients with metal implants. Our hope is that the results of this experiment will lead to this treatment being offered to many more patients, thereby avoiding the need for medications with associated side effects. With this treatment being more widely available, we also anticipate cost savings for the NHS.
