Portsmouth AI and Data Science Centre

Organisation profile

Organisation profile

Historically, research in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) was largely confined to academic institutions. A recent surge in sophisticated methodologies and growing engagement from diverse sectors—including small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)—has, however, demonstrated an escalating demand for scholarly expertise. This widening interest underscores the transformative potential of AI and ML in driving innovation and efficiency across industries and has precipitated a marked increase in both research opportunities and funding.

The Portsmouth Artificial Intelligence and Data Science Centre (PAIDS) at the University of Portsmouth is a cross-disciplinary research hub devoted to “Localised AI” – the development of context-aware, application-driven solutions. Despite significant advances in AI and large-scale models over recent decades, there remains a pressing need for further research, innovation and real-world deployment. Drawing on extensive experience gained through collaborations with industry and public-sector partners, PAIDS unites specialists in machine learning, cybersecurity, quantum computing and the social sciences to devise practical, explainable and scalable AI systems. Its portfolio spans securing next-generation networks and analysing online behaviour through enhancing healthcare diagnostics and designing intelligent, low-carbon urban environments.
