I am a Reader in Economics in the Faculty of Business and Law.
I have a real interest in research that has a useful and positive impact for businesses and people’s lives. I started my academic career at the University of Portsmouth focussing on economic analysis projects. Helping local organisations, such as the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, to achieve strategic objectives by providing a clear picture or their impact on the local economy.
I’ve worked for and alongside UK and EU government to help inform policy decisions. Influencing changes to local authority funding under the Fair Funding Review by quantifying the cost to public funds on being an island. Helping shape communications between EU policy makers and EU citizens by investigating to what extent citizens actually feel European and to what extent this actually relates to the implementation of European cohesion policies, through the Horizon 2020 project PERCEIVE.
I enjoy sharing academic research with a wider community through popular media, such as commenting on the impact of pandemic lockdown on young people.
I have a PhD in Economics from the University of Portsmouth and an MSc in Economics from the University of Southampton.
The first academic paper stemming from my PhD thesis was awarded the Neil Rackham prize for research dissemination in 2012, appearing in a number of news and sports websites globally.
After winning the Knowledge Services Award for leadership of Applied Research in 2015, I took on a faculty wide role for facilitating consultancy stemming from internationally recognised research. Helping small teams to bring their academic research into a consultancy domain to help inform business or government policy.
I was previously the Director of undergraduate economics courses, leading and managing undergraduate teaching teams to deliver economics education to on campus students. I am proud of our 'TEF Gold' standard of teaching and student experience at the University of Portsmouth and enjoy continually developing our curriculum.
This experience has shaped my ideals towards research that has a useful, positive impact and yet is accessible to a wide audience.
Current PhD supervision includes topics in: Earnings inequality across Europe; Corruption within sports organisations; and environmental impact of tourism. I welcome supervision in areas of economic impact, health, and professional football.
My own PhD thesis investigated the impact of selling Premier League football broadcast rights on the demand for watching live matches and the implications for competitive balance.
More widely, I focus on applied microeconomics areas covering issues of: Regional economics; environmental policy; economics of professional sports; corruption and malpractice.
I am happy to take calls and emails from the media on my research and am aware of the need to respond to journalists in a timely manner. Please contact me directly on adam.cox@port.ac.uk.
I have taught on a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate modules in the area of microeconomics across the Faculty of Business and Law. My particular interest is teaching economics to non-specialist students. Current teaching focusses on a newly developed module Intermediate Economics using the new CORE economics book and computer lab workshops for BA Economics and Management students.
