Personal profile

Summary

I am a Reader in Economics at the University of Portsmouth. I have over 10 years of research and consultancy experience in economics. My particular interest is in the economics of football and striving to help the sector make better-informed decisions.

Biography

I have a PhD in Economics from the University of Portsmouth and an MSc in Economics from the University of Southampton.

The first academic paper stemming from my PhD thesis was awarded the Neil Rackham prize for research dissemination in 2012, appearing in a number of news and sports websites globally.

I was previously the Director of undergraduate economics courses, leading and managing undergraduate teaching teams to deliver economics education to on campus students. I am proud of our 'TEF Gold' standard of teaching and student experience at the University of Portsmouth and enjoy continually developing our curriculum.

This experience has shaped my ideals towards research that has a useful, positive impact and yet is accessible to a wide audience.

Research Interests

My main research interests lie in the economics of sport, in particular, professional football. I have investigated the impact of selling Premier League football broadcast rights on the demand for watching live matches and the implications for competitive balance.

Current PhD supervision includes topics in corruption within sports organisations and I welcome supervision in areas of economics of football.

Media Availability

I am happy to take calls and emails from the media on my research and am aware of the need to respond to journalists in a timely manner. Please contact me directly on adam.cox@port.ac.uk.

Teaching Responsibilities

I have taught on a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate modules in the area of microeconomics across the Faculty of Business and Law. My particular interest is teaching economics to non-specialist students. Current teaching focusses on a newly developed module Intermediate Economics using the new CORE economics book and computer lab workshops for BA Economics and Management students.
