I graduated from Wadham College, University of Oxford with an MA in Engineering Science. I am also a Chartered Accountant (Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) with working experience in public practice in the areas of audit and consulting.
In addition to having a PGCE in Post-Compulsory Education and being a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, I have many years of experience of working in industry in senior financial management positions. I qualified as a Certified Fraud Examiner in 2010.
I have had research articles published in a range of journals. Subjects include the role of the financial controller, teaching ethics to accounting students, developing students' writing skills and football finance issues. I am an editor for the International Journal of Management Education and for Soccer and Society.
I joined the Unversity of Portsmouth in 2005 and have since the held positions of Level 4 Year Tutor and Director, Postgraduate Curriculum in the Accounting and Financial Management subject group. Currently, I am a Senior Lecturer.
Before gaining a teaching qualification and becoming an academic, I qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Touche Ross (now Deloitte) in London, working in the areas of audit, tax and management consulting. I then spent 15 years working in Financial Controller and Chief Accountant positions in the electronics and heavy manufacturing sectors in Hampshire and the Thames Valley. During this time I also performed due diligence roles in a number of company acquisitions and took a lead role in accounting systems development projects.
I have published in a number of journals and have over 180 citations to my name. My research interests focus on pedagogical issues surrounding the teaching of writing skills and also ethics teaching for accountants. I am also interested in the role of the financial controller in business organisations and in football finance matters.
I teach mainly in undergraduate financial and management accounting modules.
I also supervise postgraduate forensic accounting student dissertations.
