Personal profile
Summary
I am a Senior Lecturer in the Economics and Finance Department, responsible for admissions, outreach activities, and for final year undergraduate students. I am also the Deputy Course Leader for BA International Business.
I am interested in research where the output has some practical use or can be used to help local organisations. For example, an economic impact assessment to secure funding for the expansion of Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, or influencing changes to local authority funding under the Fair Funding Review by quantifying the costs of being an island.
My academic research interests relate to the economics of crime. My own PhD thesis investigated perceptions of youth anti-social behaviour, drug use and supporting vulnerable people in the community.
Research Interests
My academic research interest relate to the economics of crime and crime prevention.
However, I enjoy anything where economics is applied to understanding real-life situations, covering such areas as regional economics, economic impact assessments, the economics of crime, housing, health, and entrepreneurship.
My expertise lies in finding hard to reach and unusual data, as well as conducting and interpreting surveys. This led to my involvement in analysing how citizens perceive the implementation of European cohesion policies through the Horizon 2020 PERCEIVE project.
Biography
I am a Senior Lecturer in the Economics and Finance Department. My responsibilities include admissions and outreach activities, final year course tutor for economics programmes, and Deputy Course Leader for International Business.
I studied BScEcon Economics at Cardiff University and completed my PhD part-time in the economics of crime here at the University of Portsmouth while working as a Research Assistant and teaching at the International College Portsmouth.
Outside of academia, I have worked in a range of government roles in housing, strategy and crime prevention. My last role was as the crime analyst for the Safer Portsmouth Partnership, working with the police, health and charity sectors.
Teaching Responsibilities
I currently teach Macroeconomics to first year undergraduate students. We have received exceptional feedback on our teaching quality and enthusiasm every year.
I am also a dissertation supervisor in the final year Economics Research Project module, with recent completions on topics as varied as youth knife crime, police violence and the economic impact of Hallyu.
My outreach and recruitment role allows me the opportunity to teach economic concepts to non-specialists and a range of ages in fun and engaging ways.
I have taught a range of subjects to undergraduates on economics courses, from the Economics of Crime to International Economics.
