Personal profile

Summary

I am a Senior Lecturer in Communication and Applied Linguistics at the University of Portsmouth, teaching on gender, language and sexuality, and analysing media discourse. I'm also a qualified translator and interpreter between Italian, English and German.

I research the representation of violence against women in the media. I'm also interested in how violence against women and misogyny can be perpetrated through language, particularly in online contexts.

I recently completed a project on the language of incels on Reddit, in collaboration with the Institute of Criminal Justice Studies at Portsmouth. I'm currently writing a book for Palgrave on the representation of rape in the press and the influence of the #MeToo movement.

Biography

I worked as a Lecturer in English Language and Linguistics at the University of Naples Federico II before joining the University of Portsmouth as a Lecturer in Communication and Applied Linguistics.

Outside of my academic career, I've worked with organisations and think tanks including The Zero Tolerance Charitable Trust, Against Violence and Abuse (AVA), the West London Rape Crisis Centre, DEMOS and Full Fact.

When working with The Zero Tolerance Charitable Trust I worked on a project funded by the Vodafone Foundation. The project focused on readers' responses to representations of rape in the media.

Research Interests

My research focuses on the representation of violence against women in the media, both traditional and online. I am interested in the relationship between media and society and, more precisely, in issues related to gender, power and discrimination both in traditional and new media.

One of my most recent papers looked at how the media determine how we understand sexualised violence.

I use both quantitative and qualitative methods of language analysis in my research, in particular a method called Corpus Linguistics within the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis.

My current research interests include:

  • online misogyny
  • violence against women and the language in the media
  • the links between online hate speech and pornography
