Summary

Chris is a Reader in Applied Psychology. He divides his time between research, teaching and application. He has published widely in the area of organisational sport psychology, acts as Psychology Pathway Lead coordinating the School's psychology provision across our undergraduate, masters, and doctorate courses, and is an experienced practitioner psychologist within the UK's high performnce sport system.

Chris is the Editor for Sport and Exercise Psychology Review, an Associate Editor for the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology, International Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology, and Journal of Sport Psychology and sits on the editorial board of Case Studies in Sport and Exercise Psychology. He is the former Associate Editor for Journal of Applied Case Studies in Sport and Exercise Sciences.

As a practitioner psychologist, Chris’s consultancy work spans a diverse range of clients including international, Olympic and Paralympic athletes, coaches and support staff, business executives, Government agencies, FTSE100 companies, senior military officers in the British Army, Navy and Air Force, emergency service personnel, politicians, and performing artists. He is currently seconded to the English Institute of Sport as Head of Performance Psychology in the lead up to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Teaching Responsibilities

Chris is the Course Leader for the MSc Sport and Exercise Psychology, and Professional Doctorate in Sport and Exercise Psychology. His main teaching responsibilities include supervising masters and doctoral students and he coordinates postgraduate units in Psychology of Elite Performance (Level 7) and Professional Research and Development Project in Sport and Exercise Psychology (Level 8).

Research Interests

Chris’s research integrates psychological and sociological approaches to advancing knowledge on four complimentary areas relevant to organisational psychology in sport: employee emotions and attitudes, stress and well-being, organisational behaviour, and high performance environments. Collectively, this work has influenced the profession via changes to the training, development and delivery of sport psychology in elite sport environments.
