Summary

David is a Senior Teaching Fellow in Sport and Exercise Psychology and the MSc Sport and Exercise Psychology course leader at the University of Portsmouth. David is a HCPC registered Sport and Exercise Psychologist and divides his time between teaching, research, supervision, and practice. 

As a neophyte practitioner, David has previous experience in consulting with the Football Association to support international parafootball players, coaches and the wider support staff. In addition, David previously worked at Portsmouth Football Club academy as the lead performance psychologist operating across all phases of development. More recently, David supports the University of Portsmouth TASS athletes across a range of sports in preparation for national and international competitions.  

Biography

David joined the School of Sport, Health and Exercise Science in September 2021 as a Senior Teaching Fellow in Sport and Exercise Psychology. Prior to joining the University of Portsmouth, David completed a PgDip Conversion Course in Psychology (2015-2016) at Manchester Metropolitan University, MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology (2014-2015) and BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science (2011-2014) both at the University of Portsmouth. More recently, David completed a Professional Doctorate in Sport and Exercise Psychology at the University of Portsmouth. 

Teaching Responsibilities

David is the course leader for the MSc Sport and Exercise Psychology (BPS Accredited) course at the University of Portsmouth. As part of the MSc Sport and Exercise Psychology course, David's main teaching responsibilities involve coordinating the Psychology of Elite Performance and Applied Sports Psychology modules. In addition, David teaches across a number of undergraduate and postgradute modules including: Introduction to Sport and Exercise Psychology, Evolution to Sport and Exercise Psychology, Psychology of Sport and Exercise, Applications of Sport and Exercise Psychology, MSc Research Practice and Development. 

Given his extensive applied experience and involvement in the Placement and Employability commitee, David also leads on a second year Work Based Learning SHES Dual Award module. 

Research Interests

David's research interests focus on the role stress and self-care play in the performance and wellbeing of athletes, coaches, practitioners and sporting organisations. David's also has an interest in applied practice focusing on therapeutic approaches namely that of Accpetance and Commitment Therapy.
