**Accepting self-funded PhD students**
Dr David Rusling is a Senior Lecturer in Pharmacology within the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Portsmouth. His research focuses on the self-assembly and recognition of nucleic acid sequences from a biological, therapeutic and nanotech perspective. One of his long-term research projects is seeking to improve the triplex-forming properties of oligonucleotides, a class of DNA-binding agent capable of recognising unique base sequences within the major groove of double-helical DNA. Such molecules have potential to modulate the expression of specific genes, as well as introduce functionality into artificial DNA structures assembled for DNA nanotechnology. David’s recent research has appeared in several prominent journals, including Nucleic Acids Research, ACS Nano, Angewandte Chemie, and Chemical Communications.
