Biography

Professor of People Management ,and previously head of OSHRM from 2014 to 2022. Whilst at Portsmouth University, I have also held a range of managerial roles within General Management (as MBA Director) and Human Resource Management Programmes (as HR Programmes Director) and have been involved with 49 Quality Assurance events within the University, with UK universities including the University of East London, Plymouth, Gloucestershire, South Wales, Hertfordshire and Brighton as well as  Universities in Spain, Malaysia, Turkey and Greece. I successfully directed programmes through both CIPD and AMBA accreditations as well as various internal quality reviews, including collaborative partner programme reviews.  

I have written 61 chapters in 14 text books and have co-edited/authored a total of eleven editions of four best-selling text books. These text books are located in 934 University libraries across the globe. My most recent text book is  "Management and Organisational Behaviour" 13th Ed. (2023) Mullins, L.J. and Rees, G. Pearson Publishing. Mullins' text is the third highest Business School Teaching rankings text in the world, with Kotler and Porter as first and second - see https://blog.opensyllabus.org/business-school-teaching-power/ . I have published in a range of peer reviewed journals (see research interest section below).

I have held a number of external examinerships, including the Universities of Brighton, Bournemouth, Essex, Leeds Metropolitan, Derby, Bradford and Birkbeck Universities as well as the post-graduate CIPD Organizational Design and Organizational Development module. Currently an External Examiner at the London School of Economics (LSE) on their Masters in HRM programme.

I am a member of the CIPD Qualifications Advisory Group, which formulates policy for all CIPD National and International programmes, and also am a member of the CIPD Special Circumstances Panel and CIPD Appeals Panel. Prior to joining Portsmouth University, I worked within a blue chip company rising from General Management Trainee to Group Manager (4th Line Manager) within 7 years.  Following my MBA, I undertook consultancy work, spanning the private and public sectors, including clients such as Norwich Union (AVIVA), the CIPD, Bracknell Forest Borough Council, the MOD and Vosper Thornycroft.

Teaching Responsibilities

I specialise in Strategic Change Management and Strategic Human Resource Management. I have taught programmes in the Netherlands, Greece, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Guernsey and the Cayman Islands.

Research Interests

I have written numerous articles in a range of journals on the topic of burnout and employee engagement and presented my research at various national and international conferences. Reviewer for the Academy of Management, Personnel Review, the International Journal of Knowledge, Culture and Change Management, the Journal of Public Health Research, the British Journal of Management and the British Academy of Management.
