Dr Symons undertook her PhD at Loughborough University (2012-2017) under the supervision of Prof. Richard Giulianotti. Her PhD research looked at how East London regenerated post-London 2012 Olympic Games. Her MA in Sport Development (credit) was undertaken at the University of Gloucestershire, which is where her interest in post-event legacy began. Her BSc (Hons) Sport Studies was undertaken at the University of the West of England (2:1) as a top-up year following her graduation from her Foundation Degree studies (with distinction) at Bournemouth University.

 

During her time at Loughborough University, Helen was selected to undertake a short course in Olympism at the University of Tsukuba, Japan. This course was an initial part of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games 'Sport for Tomorrow' programme. Helen was able to network during this time and is still in contact with participants today. Helen has also been invited back to lecture on their Master's in Olympic Studies programme, twice in person and once online. She continues to keep links with those who run the course.

Dr Symons' research interests are focused on the social sciences, particularly the sociology of sport. Her interests are as follows:

- Impacts to communities when mega events have moved on

- Strategic planning for sport mega events

- Securitisation of mega events

- Sport Management and Education

- Community development through sporting interventions

Dr Symons currently teaches and coordinates various modules on the Sport Management and Global Sport Management pathways. These modules range on topics from contemporary issues to event management. Helen also teaches and coordinates modules on the MSc Sport Management course.
