Ian Toon

I am Principal Lecturer in the Accounting and Financial Management subject group. I hold a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education and I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I am also a qualified management accountant with wide-ranging commercial experience.

Prior to my academic career I qualified as a Chartered Management Accountant.  I worked as a project accountant for a large US listed company, a company secretary and a finance manager. I have extensive commercial experience in manufacturing, logistics and construction.

I joined the University in 2005. Alongside my teaching and research interests, I have held a number of roles within my subject group and I am currently Director of Undergraduate Curriculum for our accounting and financial management degrees.

I am been involved in number of research projects and been a member of projects which attracted external funding. Previous research projects I have been involved with, focused on the developing role of the financial controller and accounting education. My current research is focused on accounting history, with a particular interest in accounting in early modern England and the influence of accounting practice on individual lives, organisations and institutions

I teach on the Strategic Management Accounting module. I am also involved with the delivery and supervision of the Undergraduate Dissertation module. I have previously taught both undergraduate and postgraduate modules, including Management Accounting, Business Accounting, Costing and Financial Reporting.  I have a postgraduate certificate in learning and teaching in higher education and I am Fellow of the HEA. I have a keen interest in blended learning and developing our student’s transferable skills.
