Summary

 

I am Professor of Finance and Director of the Centre for Innovative and Sustainable Finance.

I am Adjunct Professor of the University of Jordan and Visiting Professor of a number of Chinese Universities, including Dalian University of Technology and South China University, among others; and also of the University of Pecs, Hungary.

I served as an expert and a consultant for various organizations on major projects, including the EU-China project, China’s governmental projects, and UK local government’s Co-Op Bank project.

I have published widely in leading journals. I have published more than 80 papers, including 16 papers in FT50 and ABS-4 rated journals, such as the Journal of Corporate Finance, Journal of Business Ethics, and the British Journal of Management. I have co-authored two monographs on corporate governance, sustainability and digital business. The latest book to which I contributed is: Digital Platforms for Sustainable Business (Elsevier).

Working with international partners, I have secured funding from UK and overseas research councils, as well as from Fortune Global 500 companies, valued at over £2 million. The projects supported included the Solent Blue Carbon Restoration Initiative; FinTech; energy pricing and efficiency; climate risk and governance; and project risk assessment and management. Resultant findings have produced measurable economic benefits; produced policy papers; and informed policy, industry and practice.

Awards and Honours

  • I was awarded the Fellowship of the British Academy of Management in 2025 (“for having made an outstanding Academic contribution to Business and Management scholarship, as well as demonstrating a significant contribution to the community of scholars in the field”)
  • I was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award (LAA) in 2025 (for "substantial and direct contribution to UK academic accounting and finance”)
  • My research has won "Best Paper Award" from 1) the European Journal of Management (EU); 2) the British Academy of Management (UK); 3) the Southwest Finance Association (USA); and 4) the Eurasian Business and Economics Society (EBES).
  • My paper is recognized by Wiley as a ‘Top 10 Cited Article 2021-2022’ and ‘Top Cited Article 2022-2023’, “Government response measures and public trust during the COVID-19 pandemic: Evidence from around the world” (British Journal of Management).
  • My work has been widely cited by Research Gate, Clarivate, SSRN, Google Scholar, and the Central Banks of England and Israel.
  • My research has attracted attention from numerous media outlets, including The Conversation, The Washington Post and the Nasdaq Stock Exchange.
  • I have been regularly invited to give 23 keynote speeches at international conferences organised by learned societies, international organisations, governments and higher education institutions.

Professional Service

I promote inclusive and impactful research through my editorial activities and advocate research excellence. I serve as the editor and associate editor, and also sit on a number of journals' editorial boards.

Community Service

I have actively engaged with Accounting, Finance and Business Management communities through my leading roles in premier learned societies. I am Chair, Track Chair and an Executive of the British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA) and the British Academy of Management (BAM). I have been elected twice to the BAM Council, taking responsibility for research and publication policy within the remit of BAM. My past and current roles include:

To support members and the academic communities, I have organised and chaired more than 50 conferences worldwide, promoting research of excellence.

Biography

I joined the University of Portsmouth in 2020, and was previously Professor, Reader, Senior Lecturer and Lecturer at the Business School of the University of Salford (2002-2020). Prior to that, I was a Lecturer at the University of Leeds (1999-2002).

Before joining the University, I completed my PhD in Economics at the Department of Economics of the University of Birmingham, UK (1995-1999).

I have been an external examiner of UG and PG programmes at the University College of London and the Universities of Leeds, Cardiff, Southampton, Birmingham, and Bradford.

I have acted as External Examiner for Ph.D. theses in the areas of Accounting, Finance, Economics, Corporate Governance, and general business management at more than 30 UK and international universities.

Teaching Responsibilities

I am passionate about finance education and apply research‑led teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. I integrate cutting‑edge scholarship with the tenets of professional practice. I am committed to developing globally aware finance professionals in my mentoring of postgraduate and doctoral researchers, supporting the next generation of scholars and industry leaders.

I am passionate about research that advances understanding of how financial systems, governance structures, technological innovation, and institutions and regulations shape organisational behaviour, markets, and society.

My research spans Accounting and Finance, covering topics including corporate finance; behavioural finance; sustainable finance; alternative finance; empirical asset pricing; financial markets and microstructure; financial institutions; risk management; sustainable investment and ESG; corporate governance and accountability; sustainable accounting disclosure; non-compliance; corporate misbehaviour and market manipulation; market information and transparency; Digitization, FinTech, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, and Generative AI in finance.

My research engages in inter-disciplinary investigations, incorporating the role of accounting and finance in society and social values, informing public policy, practice and industries.
