Personal profile

Biography

I joined the ICG in February 2021 as a Senior Research Fellow and Proleptic Senior Lecturer. Before this I was an Ernest Rutherford Fellow in DAMTP (University of Cambridge) since early 2020, following three years as a Junior Fellow at the Institute for Theoretical Studies (ETH Zurich). Going further back, I was a Research Fellow of the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 & a Beecroft Fellow at the University of Oxford from 2012-2017, having received my PhD from Imperial College London in 2012.

Research Interests

My research takes place at the interface between cosmology, gravitational wave science and particle physics, integrating methods that range from developing data-driven numerical codes to deriving theoretical bounds from high-energy physics in order to better understand gravity.

My recent focus has been precision-testing General Relativity and probing potential new gravitational physics over a vast range of scales. These range from the very largest observable scales (cosmic microwave background, large scale structure), to intermediate scales (gravitational waves emitted by black hole and neutron star binaries, solar system tests) to the very small scales associated with yet unknown UV completions for gravitational theories (particle theory bounds associated with unitarity, causality and locality).

In terms of day-to-day work, on the theoretical side this e.g. means I like to find out what we can learn about the nature of gravity using cosmological or black hole perturbation theory and from scattering amplitude calculations, while on the more observational side I e.g. use cosmological data sets or observed gravitational wave signals to compute constraints on the underlying fundamental physics.

I am a member of the following international collaborations:

  • The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO).
  • The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA).
  • The Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST).
  • The Euclid mission.
  • The Dark Energy Survey (DES)
