Dr Leah Fox is a Principal Lecturer in Criminology and Criminal Investigation in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Portsmouth, where she is also the Associate Head (Global Engagement) and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Leah is the Course Leader for the dual award BSc (Hons) Counter Terrorism, Intelligence and Cybercrime in partnership with Edith Cowan University, Australia.

Leah has experience in investigations, security risk management and private policing.


Dr Leah Fox gained her BSc (Hons) in Criminology, Criminal Justice and Judicial Studies and MA (distinction) in Criminal Justice, Law and Policing, both at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York (USA), an MBA at the University of Warwick (UK), and a PhD at the University of Portsmouth (UK) which focussed on practitioners’ decision making in the child safeguarding context.

Prior to entering academia, she spent 15 years working in investigative and analytical capacities in public and private sectors in the Middle East, North America and Europe. In her previous role as Lead on Global Engagement for the Institute, she developed and led a coordinated departmental strategy for internationalisation, global collaborations and activities. Additionally, she was the Book Reviews Editor for the International Journal of Law, Crime and Justice.    

As well as teaching at the University of Portsmouth, she has been an adjunct lecturer with Fairleigh Dickinson University, USA, teaching advocacy strategies and techniques to undergraduate students.

I am happy to receive informal enquiries relating to research in any of the above-indicated areas and assist in working up proposals for doctoral study.

Teaching Responsibilities

Leah teaches across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules, specifically related to intelligence, investigations, extremism and terrorism, global security and policing.
