Personal profile

I am a practice-based researcher, independent filmmaker and experienced filmmaking lecturer. As a researcher I am fascinated with storytelling for the screen and using filmmaking as a research method in its own right.

I have produced and directed short films that have been screened on UK television and at the Edinburgh, Brooklyn, Cork and WOW, Sydney, Film Festivals to name a few and have been promoted by the British Council. My latest short fiction film, About the Night, was shot during Covid and is currently doing the film festival circuit.

I use my filmmaking experience and knowledge to research the creative process of forging ideas into screen stories. My practice-based research focuses on how stories keep their integrity throughout a project in order to create meaningful and engaging films that push boundaries. I am also collaborating on research around filmmaking pedagogy and how hope and fear play crucial roles in the education of creative practitioners. I have taught production practice at universities in the U.K. and New Zealand for over 20 years. My specialist areas in terms of teaching include story development and pitching, directing, producing and audio/visual storytelling. I teach theoretical media-related courses, as well as screen-based practice-based research methodology.
