Dr Lorraine Hope is a Professor of Applied Cognitive Psychology at the University of Portsmouth and led the online elicitation program at the UK National Centre for Research and Evidence on Security Threats (CREST) until 2024. 

Over the past 20 years, her work has resulted in the development of innovative tools and techniques, informed by psychological science and practitioner demand, for obtaining accurate and detailed investigative information and intelligence across a range of investigative contexts. Specifically, she has led empirical and field research underpinning the development of the Timeline Technique, Self-Administered Interview, Structured Interview Protocol; Reporting Information about Networks and Groups (RING) task, and most recently, the Time Critical Questioning (TCQ) protocol. Her current work examines the impact of culture, reluctance, and modality on successful information gathering for intelligence purposes.

Professor Hope has received research funding totalling over GBP£2.5 million and supervised 22 doctoral candidates to the successful award of a PhD across a range of topics pertaining to information gathering in investigative and security contexts. In 2019, Professor Hope was the recipient of the Academic Excellence Award, conferred by the International Investigative Interviewing Research Group (iIIRG) in recognition of Outstanding Achievements in Investigative Interviewing. 

With global impact, she regularly provides research and training for UK and international policing, intelligence, and security sectors. Experienced in working with a range of stakeholders and end-users, Professor Hope, has published over 150 articles in peer-reviewed journals and practitioner-focused outlets on investigative interviewing, intelligence elicitation, and applied memory topics.
