Biography

Marije van den Broek pursues a PhD on sustainable rural groundwater management in Uganda. She is a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) specialist with a strong academic grounding in international development, human geography and cultural anthropology combined with on the ground experience. As a programme manager based in northern and mid-west Uganda, she was responsible for the coordination and development of WASH programmes from 2011-2014. Previously, she worked for several non-profit organisations in the Netherlands.

Research Interests

Marije’s research areas are groundwater management; community based management; participatory processes and service delivery. With her research she aims to enable evidence based policy making. In her PhD she examines the outcomes of community managed rural water points and she reviews an alternative rural water management model piloted in mid-west Uganda. Marije has a particular interest in researching innovations in service delivery. In collaboration with her supervisor Dr Julia Brown, she is writing a series of academic papers that explore past and present paradigms of rural water management in sub-Saharan Africa, and possible future alternatives.

Previously she conducted research on: disability and Hiv/Aids in South Africa, impacts of rehabilitation on children with a physical disability in Ethiopia; impacts of the tree plantation industry on local communities in Laos and the potential for applying social business principles to secondary education in Kenya.
