SUMMARY
I started my academic career with a Masters in Public Administration (MPA). Following this, I was awarded an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) studentship and undertook a Ph.D on the Transparency of Expertise in European Union Policy-making. I was appointed as a Lecturer in Public Policy in 2014 and became a Senior Lecturer and MPA course leader the following year.
TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES
At postgraduate level, I coordinate the unit ‘Comparative Public Policy and Administration’. This applies a range of theoretical perspectives to case studies drawn from the students’ own professional background. At undergraduate level, I co-ordinate two units,. ‘Analysing Politics: Britain and beyond’ is a first year programme designed to introduce key political concepts by applying them to contemporary political topics. 'Politics and Policy in Action' is a highly practical module allowing students to establish and run their own polticial campaigns. I also contribute to the undergraduate units ‘Political Thought’ and 'British Political Leadership'.
RESEARCH INTERESTS
My research interests are chiefly around transparency of expertise in the policy-making process; the role of Civil Society Organisations in promoting transparency; and the impact of Brexit on British and European politics.
I am principal investigator at the University's Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, responsible for the managememnt and delivery of €100K three year interdisciplinary project into the Study of Transnational Europe.
In addition, as a member of the University’s Faculty-funded Research Project ‘Transnational Civil Society’, I research the structure and practices of Civil Society Groups in the EU’s policy-making process, analysing the way that these groups are adapting their practices to accommodate Brexit.
PHD RESEARCH SUPERVISION
I welcome PhD proposals on topics related to policy practice, transparency, accountability, corruption/anti-corruption, British and EU politics and the role of civil society groups in policy-making.
