Personal profile


I am the Impact Lead for the Faculty of Business and Law and the Research Degree Lead for the Strategy, Enterprise and Innovation (SEI) subject group. I am also Professor of Small Business and Entrepreneurship and a member of the Academy of Management, the British Academy of Management, the European Council for Small Business and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

I have undertaken commissioned research and consultancy for a number of government agencies in Europe as well as the wider Asia Pacific region including the European Commission, the OECD, the New Zealand Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

I served on the board of the International Council of Small Business (ICSB), the Small Enterprise Association Australia and New Zealand (SEAANZ) as well as a number of government advisory boards. I am currently Co-Editor of the International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behaviour and Research.

My work has been published in leading journals in the field such as Entrepreneurship Theory and Policy, British Journal of Management, International Small Business Journal, Small Business Economics, Journal of Business Research and Industrial Marketing Management.


Prior to joining the University of Portsmouth, I was a Senior Lecturer and Co-Director of the New Zealand Centre for SME Research at Massey University. I also held visiting professor appointments at the University of Innsbruck, Hitotsubashi University and University of Bergamo.

Research Interests

My research is at the intersection of entrepreneurship and psychology. Topics that I am currently interested in include

- Emotional and cognitive microfoundations of entrepreneurial behaviour

- Drivers and outcomes of entrepreneurial wellbeing and health

- Social and sustainable entrepreneurship across different contexts including for example circular and  sharing economy

- Novel methods including for example machine learning, experience sampling methodology, experimental designs as well as temporal and processual approaches

Teaching Responsibilities

I am the module coordinator of Entrepreneurship and Business Venturing on the MSc Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship.
