I am an Associate Professor in Skill Acquisition in the School of Psychology, Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Portsmouth. I am the Research Theme lead in Culture, Behaviour, Inclusivity and Governance within our School and a member of the Centre for Interaction, Development and Diversity. I have over 50 peer-reviewed publications in outlets that primarily span the disciplines of sport and exercise science and experimental psychology. I have edited two books, and delivered 40 keynote and invited lectures. I have a wide-range of applied experience, having worked collaboratively with national and international teams in sports including rugby and football, as well as government agency.
I joined the University of Portsmouth as a Lecturer in 2013. Prior to joining the University, I completed my PhD at the University of Otago, New Zealand (2006 - 2010), worked as a Lecturer in Skill Acquisition and Coach Education (football) at the German Sport University Cologne, Germany (2010 - 2011) and completed a postdoctoral research position at the VU University Amsterdam, Netherlands (2011 - 2013). I have held visiting Professor positions at the University of Caen Normandy, France (2016) and the University of Rouen Normandy, France (2017).
My research interests are focused on the visual control of movement in natural environments and I have expertise in the use of mobile eye tracking technology. I am particularly interested in examining how perception and action are skilfully adapted to changing environmental demands across the lifespan. My research has been applied to different domains, including health and safety settings, anticipation and decision-making in sport, and training that aims to improve these facets of sport performance.
