Personal profile

I am a Lecturer in Economics in the Subject Group of Economics and Finance, within the Portsmouth University Business School. My academic career started in 2013 together with the beginning of my PhD. Since then, I have gained valuable experience in planning and delivering various undergraduate economics and finance modules as well as dissertation supervision. My research mainly focusses on the relationship between oil prices and macroeconomic activity.

I recently awarded my PhD in Economics from the University of Portsmouth. I hold an MSc in Business Economics, Finance and Banking from the University of Portsmouth and a Degree in Economics from the University of Cyprus. The fact that I am constantly involved with several activities over the years (i.e., PhD study, teaching, laboratory sessions, personal tutoring, research project supervision, research reviews, research publications, conference presentations) allowed me the opportunity to develop a strong profile in Economics and Finance. Since 2013, my employment in the higher education includes the Economics and Finance Subject Group at Portsmouth University (2013 – current), the Department of Accounting and Finance (2020 – 2021) at Sussex University and the International College Portsmouth (2013 – 2018).

Research Interests

My research area is associated with energy economics topics including oil prices, renewable energy, energy poverty and further financial markets and the macroeconomic activity. Meta-analysis energy research is also a subject to my interests. I am open to new ideas and new topics. I act as a referee for a number of journals. My review profile can be found on Publons (see, https://publons.com/researcher/1489576/michail-filippidis/). Since 2020, I publish my research papers (with my co-authors) in high impact journals (ABS3) with a potential to ABS4 in the near future.

Teaching Responsibilities

During the years, I have taught on a large variety of undergraduate modules and thus I have developed my skills in delivering lectures, seminars, and laboratory computer sessions (Stata, EViews, and Python). The current academic year 2021-22, my teaching was related to the following modules:

M22045 - Business Forecasting & Data Analysis (level 6 - module coordinator)

M25842 - International Banking & Financial Instruments (level 6)

M20459 – Financial Economics (level 6)

M20444 – International Economics (level 5)

Furthermore, I contributed to the M30871 Economics Research Project (level 6) as a supervisor.
